Little Plate also has some modulation features built right into it. This will help remove overbearing bass frequencies from your tracks. Naturally, you might assume the results “messy,” but you can dial out the extra noise with the built-in low-cut filter. The reverb tail never fades if you don’t want it to! Having captured its sound, Soundtoys couldn’t resist pushing the idea to its limits, with some fun features simply not possible with the original hardware gear.įor instance, while the original reverb could only be turned up to five seconds of reverberation time, Little Plate has infinity decay time. This plate reverb was inspired by the EMT 140. SoundToys plugins are rarely a one trick pony, and while echo is something they do well, it’s certainly not the only thing they do.īut even with their flagship EchoBoy appearing later in this guide, their Little Plate reverb is also well worth a look, especially since it’s about half the price. It’s our best premium option, not just because it’s kind of pricey, but also because it’s a practical necessity. It doesn’t have to be Auto-Tune, but again, you will need a pitch correction module of some kind for your productions, especially since Ableton Live is a little limited that way. If you don’t have your entire vocal chain figured out yet, then the tools inside Unlimited are more than worth a try. It wants to be your all-in-one vocal processing solution and has enough features to be exactly that. This version of Auto-Tune also comes with one year of Auto-Tune Unlimited for free.Īuto-Tune Unlimited comes with tons of vocal processing modules, including vocoder, mic mod EFX, chorus, de-ess, and much more. Whether it’s for that T Pain style robotic wobble, or subtle pitch correction techniques, Antares Auto-Tune is considered the gold standard against which all other similar tools are measured.Īuto-Tune Artist includes all the pitch correction and auto-tune effects you know it for, Flex-Tune, plus classic mode for that favorite “Auto-Tune 5 sound,” a new, streamlined interface, and auto-key compatibility. Regardless of the “size” you’re aiming for, you should be able to find your flavor of poison here. Pro-R, not surprisingly, features tons of room models, from small rooms to larger halls and even massive cathedrals. To that extent, a great reverb is a must. Plus, reverb usually ends up on everything – vocals, drums, guitars, synthesizers, and more. The following image contains my recommended vocoder settings feel free to modify these settings as necessary to fit the project you're working on.Not that we haven’t covered our share of verbs in this guide (see below), but FabFilter’s Pro-R is so powerful that some don’t even think of it as a verb. Envelope Depth controls how much of the modulator's envelope is applied to the carrier's signal, and Dry/Wet controls the balance between processed and dry signal. More bands will result in a more accurate analysis and a more intelligible output signal. Some key parameters that you should consider adjusting include the number of bands, Envelope Depth, and the Dry/Wet knob. If you tap the signal post mixer, there will be no sidechain input signal because you previously muted the synth track. Set The Carrier Type to "External" and Select a Sidechain Input SourceĬhange the vocoder's Carrier Type to "External" and set the sidechain input source to your synth track post FX. By default, the vocoder won't provide the effect you're looking for, so some additional setup is required. Place your vocoder on the track containing the vocals. Add a Vocoder to The Track With The Modulator Signal (Vocals) Once you've created this track, deactivate it by toggling off the Track Activator in Ableton's Mixer Section this will mute the output. You can create a MIDI track in Ableton by pressing ++. Unless you're using an external hardware synth, create a MIDI track and load your synth of choice onto it. Create a Track for Your Carrier Signal (Synth) You might have a natural flair with animation, but you’ll need to take time to hone your skills. But how do you get started? These simple steps can put you on the right path towards landing an in-house role, going freelance or just learning the skills you need to create for fun. The CGI era had begun.Īnimation is a dream job for many of us. Pixar’s first feature film, 1995’s Toy Story, was released to critical and commercial acclaim. were gaining traction in tandem with the rise of 3D videogaming in Japan. Meanwhile, Pixar’s CGI short films like Luxo Jr. But by the end of the decade, advances in computer technology led Disney to adopt digital techniques in productions like The Rescuers Down Under. Here, we see the Studio Ghibli films like My Neighbour Totoro making inroads with Western audiences. Elsewhere in the UK, Oliver Postgate’s stop-motion creations like The Clangers charmed viewers with a gentle world of mouse-like creatures who lived on the moon, spoke in whistles and ate only soup.Ĭel animation would remain prominent way into the 1980s. Terry Gilliam’s anarchic sequences in Monty Python’s Flying Circus blurred the line between cutout and collage. In the 1960s and 70s, countercultural animators, puppeteers and stop-motion artists brought non-mainstream techniques to a mass audience. Within the next three decades, Disney released motion picture classics from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to The Jungle Book. The 1930s saw the launch of Disney characters from Goofy to Donald Duck, as well as Warner Bros’ Looney Tunes creations like Bugs Bunny. This was the start of a golden age of animation. Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willie, the first outing for Mickey Mouse, was released in 1928. Six years later, Earl Hurd created cel animation - the dominant animation technique for the next seven decades. Emile Cohl’s 1908 Fantasmagorie is one of the best-known works of the era. Two centuries later, Zoetrope and phenakistiscope devices created a series of quickly changing images to suggest movement for perhaps the first time.īy the early 20th century, filmmakers were taking advantage of camera technology to create animations from hand drawings and stop motion techniques. In the 17th century, magic lantern projectors presented audiences with moving figures on static backdrops. Typography animators animate text for film, TV and marketing. This helps them to demonstrate the way their products work - from assembly to repair. Engineers often create 3D renderings of complex mechanical goods. You can use masking to cover and hide portions of an image against a backdrop - creating the illusion of an object moving in and out of its setting. Animators create a rig or skeleton, consisting of a surface representation and a set of interconnected parts, with a set of key movements. This technique is widely used in 3D and 2D animation to create moving characters. Easing makes these everyday actions feel more natural. It’s a subtle but important art - when we throw a ball or open a drawer, it rarely opens at the same speed. Easing help animators create realistic transitions in movement. Today, the process has gone digital - but the name has stuck. In this technique, animators trace animated images over motion picture footage, traditionally using a glass-panelled device called a Rotoscope. This can be used to mimic comic book or cel animation aesthetics. Cel shading is used to make 3D computer graphics appear flat. Today, AI technology does a lot of the heavy lifting. Animating a mouth to match its speech can be complicated - but it’s essential to creating a realistic character. Creating a basic walk cycle of four key motions is relatively simple, but making realistic walk cycles requires close attention to detail. This cycle is then repeated to avoid having to animate each step again. A walk cycle ties a series of individual motions together to create the impression of walking. Morphing had something of a heyday in 1980s and 1990s music videos and live action films. Beloved of sci-fi, horror and fantasy creators, morphing involves transitioning one image into another. These booklets contain a series of images that, when flicked between pages, gradually create the impression of a moving image. If you want to see the essence of animation, take a look at a flip book. Famous claymation artists include Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park. The result is charmingly lo-fi but highly intricate. Claymation artists use stop-motion techniques to capture the movements of miniature clay models. The following day, Willy, Biff, and Happy do as they had planned, but they fail. On August 4, 2011, Apple started to take orders for Mac OS X Lion's USB installation flash drives for $69.99. It is not clear whether the USB distribution will support a direct upgrade to Lion from OS X versions prior to Snow Leopard. The only prior version of OS X that supports the Mac App Store is Snow Leopard, which implied that any machines that support Lion currently running Tiger or Leopard would first have to be upgraded to Snow Leopard, as opposed to allowing a direct upgrade to Lion.Īpple later announced two alternative distribution mechanisms for the benefit of users without broadband Internet access: in-store downloads at retail Apple Stores, and a USB flash drive containing the OS, priced at US$69, available through the online Apple Store beginning in August. Instead, the operating system was said to be available exclusively as a download from the Mac App Store for US$29.99. Īpple did not initially announce any physical media distribution for Lion, such as a set of CD-ROMs or a DVD-ROM as used for past releases. The specific release date of July 20 was not confirmed until the day before, July 19, by Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer as part of Apple's 2011 3rd-quarter earnings announcement. On June 6 at the 2011 Worldwide Developers Conference, it was announced that the official release for Lion would be in July 2011. By October 2011, Mac OS X Lion had sold over 6 million copies worldwide. Apple reported over 1 million Lion sales on the first day of its release. Lion achieved golden master status on July 1, 2011, followed by its final release via the Mac App Store on July 20, 2011. Other developer previews were subsequently released, with Lion Preview 4 (11A480b) being released at WWDC 2011. On February 24, 2011, the first developer's preview of Lion (11A390) was released to subscribers of Apple's developer program. It brings many developments made in Apple's iOS, such as an easily navigable display of installed applications, to the Mac, and includes support for the Mac App Store, as introduced in Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.6. Mac OS X Lion (version 10.7 marketed as OS X Lion) is the eighth major release of Mac OS X, Apple's desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.Ī preview of Lion was publicly unveiled at Apple's "Back to the Mac" event on October 20, 2010. After a psychological evaluation, between 10 and 13 applicants are selected for the show, with two further bakers on standby should any of those selected drop out. A second audition involves the applicants baking two recipes for the judges in front of the cameras. They then undergo a screen test and an interview with a producer. Īmateur bakers who applied to appear in the show are first assessed by a researcher, followed by an audition in London with two of their bakes. The series is normally filmed over a 12 to 13 weeks period, and the filming usually takes place over the weekends with the exception of series 11 when filming was shortened to six weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the first series, the filming locations varied in different episodes, but only one location was used for each series from the second series onwards. Reproducing the surroundings of the English village fête, the series is filmed in bunting-draped marquees in scenic gardens. Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc were approached to be presenters of the show. The development team first selected Mary Berry as a judge, and following an audition Paul Hollywood was also appointed. The pitch was successful, and Hadlow and Commissioning Editor Charlotte Moore commissioned the programme, which was then developed over the next six months. In early 2009, they pitched the idea to Janice Hadlow, then controller of BBC Two. Beattie was also inspired by the classic English village fête baking competitions she said: "I loved that idea of village fetes and an old-fashioned baking competition with people who only wanted to bake a good cake." However, Beattie failed to interest any channel in the idea for four years. The baking competition was conceived by producer Anna Beattie after she spoke to a friend who had seen 'bake-offs' in America. Its format has been sold globally for production of localised versions and was used as the basis for two BBC Two series, The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down.īackground Development Competitive baking, such as making Victoria sponge ( pictured), is part of the classic English village fête which inspired the series. On 3 October 2023 it was confirmed that The Great British Bake Off will return in 2024 for its fifteenth series. Hollywood and Prue Leith are the current judges. Following its move to Channel 4, Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig took over as presenters, but Toksvig was later replaced by Matt Lucas and Lucas also later was replaced by Alison Hammond. The programme was originally presented by Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, with judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. After its seventh series, Love Productions signed a three-year deal with Channel 4 to produce the series for the broadcaster. The first episode was aired on 17 August 2010, with its first four series broadcast on BBC Two, until its growing popularity led the BBC to move it to BBC One for the next three series. You know, I think it”s not a wholly conscious thing. “And maybe there”s some money there as well. “I think he sees two very beautiful people that are adventurous and something is different than the other tourists,” Isaac says. In the early moments of the film, Rydal could walk away from Chester and Colette at any moment, but Isaac says it's that spark that gets him sucked in. He notes, “I thought that was a great little piece of information for an actor to play with.” Isaac says one of his biggest inspirations for the character was a line from the book, which - paraphrasing - is that Rydal would scan every person that walked by him and see if there was an adventure in their eyes. At least this is someone who is aspiring to be what Chester is or Chester is a warning of what he could become. “I thought that was an interesting choice on Hossein”s part because it further illustrates how similar, these two sides of one coin. “He's not skimming money off tourists,” Isaac says. In the book, Rydal is not a small time operator and is closer to Chester's level of corruption. None of that modern day conflict seeps its way into the film, but fans of Highsmith's novel should know there are some notable changes. I got back to the hotel and found that a lot of the workers from the hotel were out front picketing and on strike. In fact, at one point after shooting from set and suddenly there was this huge cloud of tear gas coming towards me, and then a line of protestors running the opposite direction. There was a lot of strikes happening as well. And so it was a little bit of an intense environment. And clashes between protestors and the police. “That was pretty wild because at the same time that we were shooting there were riots going on,” he recalls. Isaac says the visit was certainly memorable, but not as a vacation spot. You'd assume they were in the city for weeks, but it turns out they crammed in a tremendous amount in only two days. A good chunk of the film takes place in Athens (one scene has Rydal acting as tour guide at the Parthenon). As you'd expect, it is very picturesque, having filmed on location in Crete, Istanbul and London. “Two Faces” isn't necessarily a tearjerker, but it features strong performances across the board, a wonderfully dark Highsmith storyline, beautiful cinematography and classically tempered direction by Amini that suits the material. So I think it”s OK, because, you know, your judgment”s a little bit impaired.” “But, you know, I think every movie that I watch on a plane - no matter what it is - I cry. “This is the first time that I”ve done a movie where it”s on a plane before it actually premieres ,” Isaac jokes. It's a slightly unusual release pattern for an English language production (although “Snowpiercer” is a contemporary example of the same extended release schedule) and Isaac finds it somewhat humorous. In fact, this pundit first saw the movie on a plane back to the states over the summer. The film debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February to positive reviews and by June had already opened in major markets such as Germany, France and the UK. But Chester and Colette (Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst) are not what they seem and soon pull Rydal into their web of deceit and troubles. An expatriate pretty much getting by as a small time con man, Rydal's world changes after he meets an intriguing married American couple visiting Greece in the middle of a long European vacation. At this exact moment, however, Isaac is taking a few hours after a long day of shooting “Episode VII” to discuss a film he's quite proud of, Hossein Amini's “The Two Faces of January.”Īn adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1964 novel, “Two Faces” finds Isaac playing Rydal, a twentysomething living in 1962 Athens, Greece. The cast has another few weeks of filming, but Isaac is taking a well deserved four day vacation before moving on to his next project, David Simon's HBO mini-series “Show Me A Hero.” Somewhere during that production Isaac will fit in press and, likely, some awards season events for his December thriller “A Most Violent Year.” So anyone who was afraid Hollywood wouldn't find ways to utilize the “Inside Llewyn Davis” star needn't have worried. Heads up everyone: Oscar Isaac's last day shooting “Star Wars: Episode VII” is this Friday, Sept. As pioneers in a frontier penal colony, they forged. For the rough-hewn prisoners who made it to shore, a new world awaited. This punishment by ‘transportation’ began in 1788, and many of the lawless died at sea. In 1876, Harrington, along with six others, braved a massive typhoon in nothing more than a tiny rowboat to board an American whaling ship in what is now remembered as The Catalpa Escape. Upon conviction, British rogues, guilty of at least one of the 19 Crimes, were sentenced to live in Australia, rather than death. A British conscript turned infamous convict, Michael Harrington is perhaps best known for orchestrating one of the most daring escapes from Australia. He published poetry throughout the harrowing journey to Australia and, once there, outwitted prison guards to escape to America. O’Reilly, however, was no ordinary convict. In 1867 John Boyle O’Reilly was given a sentence second only to death in its severity: transportation. “Only those who have stood within the bars and heard the din of devils and the appalling sounds of despair… can imagine the horrors of the hold of a convict ship." - John Boyle O’Reilly Some men overcome adversity. So, what is a “Spiral Betty”? Well, it’s a spiral design, that’s for sure however it appears to have been inspired by a French painter and engraver, Claude Mellan, that used to do engravings with a single line in a spiral pattern so, not really a ‘Betty’. It works by varying the line width as the spiral grows and this creates an optical illusion to the viewer. Sometimes to get the effect you have to stand back or squint your eyes. Here’s an example of a very fine spiral with my mush…Īnyhoo, how does this relate to the Scan N Cut? Well, because this is one continuous shape, we can create a cutting file from it by tracing it in Canvas Workspace. With this file we can then either draw it and frame it or we can cut it from a thin material like vinyl or HTV and use it to adorn stuff. Now, there are a few steps to get from creating the design, through creating the cutting file and on to setting up the machine for cutting vinyl – blade settings and depth etc – so I thought that I would throw together a video to cover those points. I have not covered actually cutting this out, as that is pretty standard across the board and nor have I shown the application as this will vary depending on the material used and the project it is being applied to but there are plenty of tuts out there no matter what you want to do. Obvs if you have any questions, bung them below and I’ll do my best to sound intelligent. It’s crammed with over 14 hours of on-demand video right from setting your Scan N Cut up, all the way through the three key functions of cutting, drawing and scanning on both the CM and DX models and also covers using both versions of Canvas Workspace software too! Update: The New Swap Background And Foreground Feature.Oh, and whilst I am shamelessly plugging things, did you know that I have literally THOUSANDS of SVG cutting files available? Some are free too! If you are interested in checking them out, please visit the SVG Cuttin g File Shop Archive. I mean that’s exactly what it looks looks like right? It’s an online tool that turns images into spiral works of art, think of it a bit like a record? When I first saw it, I assumed it was a printable image and I know many have thought the same. When in fact Spiral Betty is exactly like a record, and a genus idea. The image is created by splitting the image into two spiral layers and if you zoom in these spiral lines differ in depth to create light and shade and this creates an image. Once your cut file is weeded, the way the image presents itself depends on the background. I have seen lots of talk and people berating themselves for creating or weeding their Betty wrong. However a simple change of background will resolve that. I have cut the below image on blue iron on vinyl and transferred it to card. The lighter background shows the image as blue shaded photo, it totally blow my mind that a series of lines can create an image so detailed. However on a darker background the image appears more like a negative. This doesn’t mean you have weeded you cut wrong, it means the back layer need to be lighter. Have a play around with this as the results really differ depending on the colour. Update: The New Swap Background And Foreground Feature. This new feature allows you to cut your Spiral Betty depending on a chosen background. Thus you can flip your image to suit a light or dark background, this is such a wonderful addition and it give you so many more options. Simply click the squares underneath the download image and you can flip your image in seconds to suit a darker background.
